Information on Blood Pressure: Basics
Blood pressure is a central mechanism in the human cardiovascular system. It keeps blood moving through the vessels so that every cell can get oxygen and nutrients. The heart acts as a pump and pushes the blood through the arteries at the right pressure. If the pressure falls too low for various reasons, the body can no longer be optimally supplied with oxygen and nutrients. If it becomes too high, the blood vessels can be damaged and disease may result. Blood pressure is an important parameter for assessing a persons health. From routine check-ups to intensive care treatment, measuring blood pressure is indispensable in patient care.
High blood pressure is one of the common chronic conditions in Germany. In medical terms the disease is called arterial hypertension. A lifestyle marked by lack of exercise, an unhealthy diet and stress, together with individual genetic factors, can cause blood pressure to rise gradually and put peoples health at risk.
Patients often dont even realize they have the condition. High blood pressure often causes no symptoms or only vague ones. The disease can therefore develop and progress unnoticed. The presence of risk factors for example overweight, lack of exercise, smoking or alcohol use, as well as a family history of high blood pressure should be reason enough to check blood pressure regularly. This does not always require a visit to the doctor. For example, blood pressure measurements are also offered in pharmacies. If high readings are found, you should see your family doctor as soon as possible. They can carry out the necessary diagnostics and start the right treatment.
If high blood pressure is detected and treated in time, the consequences of the disease in the worst case a heart attack or a stroke can be avoided. Hypertension can be effectively treated with various measures. With an early diagnosis, a change in lifestyle is often enough to bring blood pressure back to normal. Treatment with medication does not limit the patients quality of life and is effective, so the consequences of the disease can be prevented.
